The speed at which garments are produced have drastically increased in order to meet consumer demands and unfortunately, quality control often takes a back seat during production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this blog post, we\u2019ll take a quick look at 5 apparel brands that failed, and how they turned around their damaged reputations to revive their apparel quality management systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H&amp;M<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 692px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"apparel brands that have failed\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/2723484\/Blog%20images\/February\/H&amp;M.jpg\" alt=\"apparel brands that have failed - H&amp;M\" width=\"692\" data-constrained=\"true\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H&amp;M, often referred to as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pioneer of \u2018fast fashion\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is one of the world\u2019s largest and fastest growing retailers and is extremely popular among consumers for its ability to produce affordable trendy products at an incredible speed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea is that cheap designer knock-offs are created, worn only while they\u2019re on trend and then replaced by the next season\u2019s trend pieces. Unfortunately, this cycle of production has destructive effects on the environment due to its large water and resources requirements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therichest.com\/rich-list\/5-of-the-biggest-clothing-brand-scandals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H&amp;M along with other brands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were criticized by Greenpeace in their report titled \u2018Dirty Laundry\u2019. In addition to this, H&amp;M have been found to make use of Youngor Textile Group\u2019s factories for manufacturing which is known for releasing hazardous chemicals, mainly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFC\u2019s, Alkylphenols, and hormone disruptors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waterways by the Pearl and Yangtze River deltas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The Fix<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H&amp;M denied using wet processing at Youngor\u2019s factories and in an attempt to preserve their brand\u2019s reputation, they embarked on a series of sustainable \u2018 Look Good, Do Good, Feel Good\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hmgroup.com\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marketing campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which have been prominent in their marketing strategy to this day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sgtgroup.net\/es\/ebook-como-lo-hace-hm-patagonia-zara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H&amp;M continues to tackle sustainability issues<\/a> such as ethical working conditions, environmental conservation, and animal testing in order to provide sustainable fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zara<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 692px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Zara\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/2723484\/Blog%20images\/February\/shutterstock_339698258%20(2)%20(1).jpg\" alt=\"apparel brands that have failed - Zara\" width=\"692\" data-constrained=\"true\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sgtgroup.net\/es\/how-even-large-clothing-brands-fail-on-fabric-quality-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In our previous blog post<\/a>, we discussed Zara\u2019s quality mishap in 2011 when the brand failed three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sgtgroup.net\/es\/100-inspeccion-del-producto-acabado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quality control tests<\/a> on their garments, making them the only brand to have failed three successive quality tests! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, we\u2019ll take a look at an incident in 2012 where Zara, along with 20 other popular fashion brands, were accused by Greenpeace of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selling clothing contaminated with hazardous hormone disrupting, cancer causing chemicals which are harmful to customers and the environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These harmful chemicals contribute to toxic water pollution. Greenpeace launched their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/news\/Blogs\/makingwaves\/the-toxic-tale-behind-your-clothing\/blog\/43044\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detox campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which saw thousands of Zara\u2019s fans leaving comments on their Facebook Page urging the company to Detox, expressing their desire for \u201cfashion without pollution\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 300, 000 fans signed up for the \u2018Detox Zara\u2019 petition or emailed and tweeted Zara directly, demanding the change to be made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The Fix<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zara felt immense pressure from Greenpeace and the public to make a change <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and after Greenpeace campaigners began a conversation with Zara about eliminating the release of harmful chemicals during the production of their clothes, the brand decided to do something out the problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November 2012, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/news\/features\/Zara-commits-to-go-toxic-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zara committed to eliminate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all discharge of harmful chemicals from its supply chain by 2020. Zara also vowed that by 2013, 100 of its suppliers will make information about the release of hazardous chemicals available to the public and the media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Successfully encouraging Zara to make the change was a huge breakthrough for Greenpeace as Zara being one of the world\u2019s largest fast fashion brands, has the ability to set an example for other fashion brands all over the world. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nike<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/2723484\/Blog%20images\/February\/Nike.jpg\" alt=\"apparel brands that have failed - Nike\" width=\"692\" height=\"389\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nike hardly needs any introduction, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-nike-fixed-its-sweatshop-image-2015-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlling an estimated 62%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of athletic footwear brand share in the US, there\u2019s no denying the brand\u2019s popularity and you can probably recall your first pair of Nikes, right? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in the early 90s, Nike burned under the public eye\u2019s magnifying glass because of the its use of sweatshops and maquiladoras in order to produce their products. The working conditions were horrendous where workers were forced to work overtime in small areas, with very little air for as little as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 cents an hour<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were also allegations of child labor, verbal and physical abuse as well as unjustified termination. This lead to the public breaking out in humiliating public protests at the Olympics and Nike stores and as a result, in 1998, Nike experienced a dramatic decline in sales. Nike\u2019s negative reputation took 7 years to shake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The Fix<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts attribute Nike\u2019s change in perception to their honest and transparent approach to the labor scandal that occurred as well as their ability to admit to their mistakes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former CEO Phil Knight started to aggressively make internal changes in the company and took <a href=\"\/es\/soluciones-de-auditoria-de-calidad-textil\/evaluacion-qms-textil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corrective steps<\/a> to raise the minimum wage, improve labor conditions and ensured clean air within the factories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nike also produced multiple reports in which they reveal conditions and wages within their factories. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/about.nike.com\/pages\/our-ambition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are still published today on their website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lululemon Athletica<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 692px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Lululemon Athletica\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/2723484\/Blog%20images\/February\/lulu-lemon.jpg\" alt=\"apparel brands that have failed - Lululemon Athletica\" width=\"692\" data-constrained=\"true\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian athletic apparel retailer <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/shop.lululemon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lululemon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s leading workout-wear are worn predominantly by Canadian college students and yoga enthusiasts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2013, Lululemon made a costly mistake in the production of their popular women\u2019s yoga pants which lead to the recall of a massive 17% of garments and a loss of 67 million dollars! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span>he yoga pants\u2019 fabric was see-through or too sheer. According to some, this was done as an attempt to decrease manufacturing costs. This caused loyal customers and investors to question the brand\u2019s motives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The Fix<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excuse the pun here, but once again, transparency was the key. Lulu handled the crisis with explicitness by offering a full explanation and refunds to the public and promised to have a new and improved version of the yoga pants back on the shelves within 90 days. Former CEO Christine Day also immediately fired their chief product officer. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GAP<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 692px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"GAP\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/2723484\/Blog%20images\/February\/GAP.jpg\" alt=\"apparel brands that have failed - GAP\" width=\"692\" data-constrained=\"true\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an American worldwide clothing and accessories retailer, found itself under scrutiny from the public after a video and images were released of children as young as 10 working a 16 hour day in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Delhi, India, sweatshop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was said that the factory was described as a neglected unit and the hallways were flowing with excrement from a flooded toilet. One child worker told the media that if any of the children cried, they would be hit with a rubber pipe or punished with an oily cloth stuffed in their mouths. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The children were used to produce hand-stitched kid\u2019s blouses for the Christmas market in the US and EU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The Fix<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately for GAP, the owners were completely unaware of the child labor and working conditions as the vendor that had ordered the clothes had subcontracted the work to a Delhi workshop where children were employed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GAP <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/11\/15\/business\/worldbusiness\/15iht-gap.1.8349422.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responded immediately<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by terminating their relationship with the vendor, announced that a $200 000 grant would be given to improve working conditions and in an open letter to the public, stated that children who were found working on the blouses will be paid until they were the correct working age by law as well as be offered employment. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The famous saying, <em>\u2018with great power comes great responsibility\u2019<\/em> is applicable here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brands that operate on such a large scale internationally have the responsibility to act sustainably, putting the public\u2019s best interest first. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But sometimes, even the most popular brands fail, and it\u2019s the response to the crisis that will determine the effect on the brand\u2019s reputation in the long-run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What other brands can you name that have failed and how did they recover? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bfTiene alguna pregunta sobre la gesti\u00f3n de la calidad de las prendas de vestir? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;d love to hear from you.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the fashion industry, specifically, when it comes to fast fashion, errors are almost inevitable.
